The pre-production of Daybreakers started in Nov 2004 when Lionsgate acquired the script to the flick. This was created by the Spierig bros. The brothers directed the 2003 film Undead. After two years, the film received financing assistance from Film Finance firm Australia. Due to this, the film is slated to be shot in Australia.
In May 2007, Hawke was cast in the lead role. Also in the same month, Neill joined. The green light on filming happened two months later on July 16, 2007.WETA, the same company that made the creature effects for The Lord of the Rings trilogy are also behind Daybreakers. The flick has a $21 million budget and the State presidency also contributed to the filmmakers. They finished filming in September 2007 - right in good time. There were some re-shoots but these were done swiftly and further delays were avoided.
Hawke describes the film as a story of man's pacing with naturally occuring resources. Folks have been abusing the planet's resources so now there are wishes for substitutes. Hawke has also released statements the film was'low art' and'unpretentious and silly.' If you like vampire films then this is another movie that you should not miss.
